12 Steps and Biblical Comparisons (NIV Scriptures)
How do the 12 Steps compare to the Bible? Each Step lines up with Scripture that expresses the same spiritual work: honesty, surrender, confession, amends, and steady contact with God. Below is a step-by-step comparison using the official Twelve Steps (reprinted with permission) and paired NIV Bible verses.
The Steps have often been framed in secular terms as the movement has grown. Their shape is still deeply biblical. In this coaching we treat them as foundational, not optional: the same principles we use to lay the groundwork for sobriety, worked through guided reflection, action, and conversation.

Step 1: Admission
AA Step: “We admitted we were powerless over alcohol—that our lives had become unmanageable.”
Romans 7:18
For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out.
2 Corinthians 12:9
But He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.
Step 2: Hope
AA Step: “Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.”
Hebrews 11:6
And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him.
Philippians 2:13
For it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill His good purpose.
Step 3: Decision
AA Step: “Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.”
Romans 12:1
Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.
Matthew 11:28-30
Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
Step 4: Inventory
AA Step: “Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.”
Lamentations 3:40
Let us examine our ways and test them, and let us return to the Lord.
Psalm 139:23-24
Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.
Step 5: Confession
AA Step: “Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.”
James 5:16
Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.

1 Peter 5:6
Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that He may lift you up in due time.
Step 8: Restitution List
AA Step: “Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all.”
Luke 6:31
Do to others as you would have them do to you.
Colossians 3:13
Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.

FAQ
Common questions about biblical 12 Steps
What Bible verses go with each of the 12 Steps?
Each Step above is paired with two NIV passages. For example, Step 1 uses Romans 7:18 and 2 Corinthians 12:9. Step 2 uses Hebrews 11:6 and Philippians 2:13. Use the jump links at the top of the page to go straight to any Step.
Are the 12 Steps biblical?
The Steps were not written as a Bible study, but their purposes track closely with Scripture: admitting powerlessness, trusting God, honest inventory, confession, amends, prayer, and service. This page shows those parallels so you can study them side by side.
What is the difference between AA and a Christian approach to the Steps?
Alcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship program for alcoholism recovery. It is not affiliated with this site. A Christian approach names Jesus Christ as the higher Power, grounds the work in Scripture and prayer, and may include private coaching rather than open meetings. This guide is educational, not an AA meeting or official AA material beyond the permitted Step reprint.
How is this different from Celebrate Recovery?
Celebrate Recovery is a church-based program with its own curriculum, meetings, and leadership structure. Stand-To! Coaching is private Christ-centered coaching for men and families, not a CR group or CR substitute. This page is a free Scripture comparison for personal study.
